Here i'm making a solid base mesh which gives me a strong base for the detail to go in on top of.
The artist who drew the images was a little out of line however with the random dis proportions and off angel parts I've decided it would be better for me to not try and fix the problems in photoshop/gimp and just use artist license to solve it in the modelling of him.
Here I'm not keen on the shoulder topology and the twist there is from the reference images, I have ideas for how I'm going to take the area and it needs to be done next before i take the res any further.
